Understanding Back Pain

First-Time Back Pain Episodes

Your first episode of back pain might feel sudden, but it is rarely spontaneous. Often, it’s the culmination of years of subtle imbalances, poor posture, and inefficient movement patterns. For example:

  • Restricted Hip Mobility: If your hips cannot rotate or extend properly, your lower back compensates, leading to strain.
  • Weak Core Muscles: Poor stability in the trunk can overload the lumbar spine

Without addressing the root causes, the pain might subside temporarily but leave you vulnerable to future episodes. Statistics show that 50% of people with back pain will experience another episode within a year.

Recurrent Back Pain

Recurrent back pain often results from unaddressed movement dysfunction. Common factors include:

  • Compensation Patterns: The body adapts to pain or weakness by recruiting alternative muscles, which can lead to overuse and strain.

  • Poor Movement Coordination: A lack of synchronisation between stabilising and moving muscles exacerbates stress on the back.

  • Chronic Overload: Repetitive stress on tissues leads to wear and tear over time.

  • Changes in Feedback To the Brain: The feedback pathways become overly responsive, sometimes activating unnecessarily, making normal movement feel painful.
