Tackle Your Back Pain and Reduce Chances Of It Recurring

  • Your back is stronger than you think and 98% of cases of back pain are a simple strain only.
  • You rarely need a scan as it is normal to see some spinal changes.
  • Avoid rest and keep moving as much as you can even if you are experiencing some pain. Studies have shown that prolonged inactivity for people with low back pain may actually cause higher levels of pain, poorer recovery and longer absence from work.
  • You should not fear bending or lifting but ensure you move correctly.
  • Exercise and activity reduce and prevent back pain. Start exercising slowly and gradually build up the amount and intensity of what you are doing.
  • Painkillers will not speed up your recovery and should only be used in conjunction with moving and exercise.
  • Surgery is rarely needed, exercise and activity should always been the first port of call.
  • Get good quality sleep as this assists in reducing stress and helps you deal with pain should it occur.
  • You can have back pain without any injury. Factors such as psychological, physical general health and social can all contribute to causing back pain.

If the pain does not settle after 6-8 weeks then is the time to see your physiotherapist or GP. However there are a few rare symptoms for which you should contact your GP:

  • Feeling unwell with your back pain such as a fever or significant sweating that wakes you up
  • Difficulty passing urine or having the sensation to pass water that is not there
  • Impaired sexual function such as loss of sensation during intercourse
  • Numbness/tingling in your genitals or buttocks area
  • Loss of bladder or bowel control
  • Loss of power in your legs.
