Student Bag Check In
Over 50% of 16 – 24 year olds have suffered at some point with pain in their neck or back.
This can be due to poor posture, both when relaxing and studying or due to the way they carry their school bags.
Nearly 31% of students use a single strapped bag. This can potentially load one side of the body more than the other. Students are often required to carry around large quantities of books which can lead to more discomfort and imbalance of the body.
Ideally a bag with two adjustable straps should be used ensuring that any weight is equally distributed through both shoulders and the heavier items are at the top and not the bottom of the back. This prevents extra strain on the upper back.
It is important that both the schools and the students are aware of the implications of the incorrect handling of bags and books.
If a single strap bag is insisted upon encourage the student to alternate shoulders and wear it across the body to evenly distribute the weight.
The stress and discomfort experienced during exam season is continually upon us and therefore simple steps can be incorporated into an everyday routine to ensure that back and neck pain do not impact on studying.
Tips are;
- Check your bag everyday so you are only carrying what is necessary.
- Sit up on a chair at a table in a good posture when studying.
- Take regular breaks and move around every 20 – 30 minutes
- Instead of getting a bus or train, try walking.
- Keep well hydrated with lots of water
