So thats what its for !

Here are some answers to everyday items that you have probably used but have no idea as to some of their hidden quirks.

The obvious use for a hole in a saucepan handle is to hang it on a rack but another way of utilizing it is to stick the handle of the utensil you are cooking with in so any food drops back into the saucepan.

  • A Bic biro has a hole in its lid to allow air to travel through it if someone accidentally swallows it and it blocks their windpipe.
  • The small bumps on the F and J keys of a keyboard. In 10 finger typing these help you locate the 2 “home” keys where the 2 index fingers rest without having to look down.
  • The small hole in the bottom of a padlock allows any water to drain away if you are using it outdoors and secondly it allows you to oil the lock to keep it functioning properly.
  • The little triangle next to the picture of a petrol pump on your petrol gauge tells you which side of your car your petrol cap is.
  • The indentations on the bottom of wine and champagne bottles is to compensate for the pressure that the liquid goes through in the corking process. As the sides and bottom of the bottles are weak spots these indentations help to evenly distribute the pressure inside.
