Netball is one of the most popular sports for young people, offering fun, fitness, and teamwork in a fast-paced environment, also a game where injuries are fairly common

Common Netball Injuries in Children

Because of the high-impact, stop-start nature of the sport, certain injuries show up time and again in younger players:

  • Ankle sprains - Often caused by twisting during landings or sharp changes in direction.

  • Knee ligament strains - From sudden stops or awkward landings when jumping.

  • Finger injuries - Sprains, or dislocations from catching or intercepting the ball.

  • Shin pain - Aching along the lower legs due to repeated running and jumping.

While many of these injuries are minor, without the right care they can linger, increase the risk of re-injury, or limit a child’s ability to play confidently.

How Physiotherapy Supports Young Netballers

Children aren’t just smaller versions of adults - their bodies are still developing, which means they need tailored treatment and rehab. Our approach includes:

  • Thorough assessment: Pinpointing the type and severity of the injury.

  • Hands-on treatment: To reduce pain, ease stiffness, and restore movement.

  • Sports-specific rehab: Focused on skills like safe landing, agility, and controlled jumping.

  • Return-to-play checks: Ensuring the child is fully ready before getting back into training or matches.

Injury Prevention Tips for Young Players

While injuries can’t always be avoided, there are steps that help reduce risk:

  • Warm up properly before training and matches.

  • Wear good-quality, supportive trainers.

  • Practise safe landing techniques during training.

  • Balance netball with strength and conditioning exercises to protect joints and muscles.
