Chocolate Milk vs. Recovery Drinks: Which one comes out on top?
Over the last few years many studies have been undertaken that show chocolate milk can be a more effective recovery drink after exercise than sports drinks like Gatorade.
According to research from Ahahid Sadoughi University in Iran chocolate milk allows people to exercise for 6 minutes longer than an average sports recovery drink as well as improving the heart rate and lactic acid levels thus reducing cramp.
After a heavy workout your body needs carbohydrates, protein, fat, electrolytes, and vitamins to help it recover. It is thought that there are three nutritional contents in chocolate milk that contribute to the benefit post sport.
The first is that there is a 3:1 ratio of carbohydrate to protein. This replenishes the glycogen within the muscle post work out. Normal milk has a 2:1 ratio.
The second is that chocolate milk contains whey protein which is easily digested and absorbed and thus gets essential amino acids circulating in the blood stream. 20% of the protein in milk is whey protein. Whey protein is thought to enhance the building and repair of muscle.
Finally a slower digested and absorbed protein, casein, sustains amino acids in the circulation many hours after it is consumed. Casein is thought to reduce the amount of muscle breakdown.
Chocolate milk also contains calcium, vitamin D and Omega-3s which are very desirable nutrients.
So before you go out and buy expensive sports recovery drinks why not consider somewhat cheaper of often tastier chocolate milk!
