Caring for your Hands and Feet this Winter.

During the cold winter months it is extremely important to keep our bodies warm, especially our extremities.

Exposure to the harsh cold can cause a number of problems including chilblains in the fingers and toes.

These are small itchy swellings on the skin which occur as a reaction to the cold temperatures. They often occur several hours after exposure to the cold as a result of blood vessels narrowing and widening too quickly.

When this happens blood can leak into the surrounding tissue and this is believed to be the reason for the swelling and itchiness.

In extreme cases the skin may break and blisters may develop.

 

There are a number of ways that chilblains can be prevented these are;

  • Using heat pads inside gloves and thermal insoles in shoes.
  • Wearing several thin layers of clothing e.g. leggings/thermals under trousers
  • Wearing thick socks and avoiding tight fitting shoes.
  • Wearing a thick sole on your shoe can help against feeling the cold.
  • Removing wet shoes, socks and gloves as soon as possible.
  • Heating shoes on a radiator before wearing.
  • Moisturising hands and feet daily to keep the skin supple and prevent drying and cracking.

 

Socks

Socks made from natural fibres such as wool will help keep your feet at a comfortable and stable temperature. Socks made from a combination of cotton and bamboo fibres will help reduce moisture in those with sweaty feet. Winter tights made of bamboo are available and are a great option for women.

Exercising the hands and feet will help to maintain general joint and muscle function.

For example;

  • Practice making a fist and then stretching all your fingers out like a star.
  • Touch each of your fingertips with your thumb tip. Now gently slide your thumb tip down the side of each finger.
  • With your hands face down on a table lift each finger up in turn.
  • Move feet in a circular motion whilst sitting.
  • Wiggle your toes.
