Golf Fitness & Conditioning

With very few exceptions, top golfers in the past were far from your typical sportsmen or women at the peak of fitness. Many bragged about never lifting anything heavier than a drink in the bar! With the new breed of players led by Tiger Woods, the modern golf professional is no longer just a golfer, but now a finely tuned athlete. When Tiger hits his driver, the immense power in his golf swing is brought about by a combination of supreme flexibility and the synchronization of a series of explosive contractions of key muscles. Tiger Woods is an athlete and he rips the ball like one.

Golfer’s today are fitter and more in tune with conditioning their body. People are finding it easier to maintain performance for a full 18 holes, gaining extra distance and making quicker and longer lasting improvements to their golf swings. But it's not just improved performance that golfers can benefit from. When your body has any specific tightness, weaknesses or imbalance and cannot perform the movements you ask it to, the result is a series of swing faults that make you more susceptible to golf-related injuries.

Here at Wimbledon physiotherapy, John Skinner is able to offer golf fitness and conditioning programmes and advice to all levels of golfers. John has trained with the best golf fitness and conditioning professionals in the world including Dr Greg Rose and Dave Phillips from the Titleist Performance Institute in U.S.A, Ramsey McMaster, consultant to The Australian Institute of Sport and Paul Chek from The CHEK Institute in U.S.A.

John is certified by both the Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) and The CHEK Institute and can provide a unique and effective system that will improve your body for golf.

The Screening Process

John will take you through a thorough golf specific screening process involving up to 30 individual assessments which will test the golfer’s physical performance in posture, balance, mobility, stability, co-ordination, core strength and endurance. Any limitations that are identified in these factors act as barriers to learning efficient golf technique, achieving any significant swing improvement and ultimately, reaching your potential.

Your Fitness Programme

The result is a complete improvement training program consisting of personalised exercises and drills to help correct these physical limitations, for good. The work-out will be based around your lifestyle, free time to exercise and the exercise equipment available to you, so that it will be achievable, not unrealistic and de-motivating. You are not expected to train for hours each day if your lifestyle does not allow you time to do so. It will be designed to be a realistic commitment whilst bringing about a marked improvement to you and your golf.

Once your program is set, the entire 18 session workout will be emailed to you along with detailed findings from your assessment. You will then be able to view your workout, an explanation of every exercise and record your progress along the way for your fitness instructor to view, all online at the TPI website. You can even download your workout onto your IPod and take it to the gym!

Any necessary adjustments can be made along the way to get the most from your program. Irrespective of your age, ability and whether you regularly go to a gym or prefer to spend just a few minutes at home, you could unlock the door to healthier and more successful golf.
