CASE STUDY: Post Partum Low Back Pain.

Mrs X, a 30 year old lady started noticing low back and right thigh pain about 6 weeks after giving birth to her first child. She reported her pain to be worse in particular after lifting and feeding her daughter.

A thorough examination showed that she sat in a poor posture, that she had pain on bending forwards and that she had poor muscle control around her low back and pelvis area. On questioning it was noted that she was feeding her baby in a poor position and was lifting her badly.

Treatment consisted of mobilisations to the lumbar spine along with some tissue work. Mrs X was taught correct lifting and carrying techniques for the baby and general baby care. She was given a programme of strengthening exercises to strengthen the muscles around her low back and pelvis.

Mrs X reported a vast reduction in her pain after a couple of physiotherapy treatments and that she generally felt more confident with handling her daughter. She had improving muscle control around her back and was encouraged to continue with her exercises on a regular basis.

CASE STUDY: Post Operative Knee.

Miss T, a 30 year old tennis player / coach came to the clinic following a reconstructive repair to her torn anterior cruciate ligament.

During the examination it was found Miss T had a swollen knee and lacked full movement of the knee. There was significant muscle weakness in the leg. She used 2 crutches to aid her walking.

Treatment consisted of advice regarding ice packs to reduce the swelling, home exercises to improve the range of movement, muscle length and power and gait re-education. The rehabilitation was progressed in difficulty as appropriate for Miss T’s sport. She also had some soft tissue massage around the knee and lower limb. She attended a short course of hydrotherapy sessions early on in her rehabilitation.

She returned to tennis some months later.

CASE STUDY : Headache

Mr B a 25 year old office worker came to the clinic with a 2 year history of headaches which were worsening over the recent months. He had seen his GP on various occasions and been prescribed varying medications with no long term benefit so he had been recommended to try physiotherapy.

A thorough examination showed poor posture with an upper neck joint problem combined with very tight and weak muscles in the neck.

Treatment consisted of mobilisations of the affected joints and soft tissue work including massage. He was also given some self help exercises which included muscle strengthening for the neck and advice about posture at work which included correct work station positioning.

At the end of the course of treatment Mr B had been headache free for over one month.. He was pleased to be able to self manage his problem and that he knew the correct posture for him at work.
